Capital Region History Day

Virtual Contest!  


The New York State Museum invites your students to participate in the Capital Region History Day's virtual contest. 

Capital Region History Day is an education program that engages students from 6th-12th grade in the discovery and interpretation of historical topics. By participating in History Day, students can research topics related to the annual theme and express themselves creatively through various formats such as exhibits, documentaries, websites, papers, and performances. 


The Capital Region History Day competition will be VIRTUAL for the 2020-2021 school year. There will be no in-person contest in 2021. 


Capital Region History Day is an affiliate of National History Day. NHD contests are divied into three tiers beyond the school level: regional, state, and national contests. All students must participate and qualify at their assigned regional contest in order to move up to the state contest.

"Communication in History: The Key to Understanding"


Important Dates: 

Registration Opens: January 20, 2021

Registration and Project Submission Deadline: March 3, 2021

Virtual Judging Begins: March 12, 2021

Results Announced:  March 26, 2021

All projects, no matter which category, are due by the submission deadline. 

Capital Region History Day Contest Registration Fee: $10 per participant


Payment Information

Payments must be made by Check or Money Order (sorry, no credit/debit cards/cash)

  • Include students full name in the memo-line. If paying for multiple students please attach a list including each students full-name.
  • Note: If a student's school is paying for the registration fee, the student will need to select "pay by check" during the registration process. Please confirm with your teacher before registering to be sure your school is covering the cost of your registration.
  • You may complete the online registration form anytime between January 20 - March 3, 2021. However, payment must be received by Monday, March 3, 2021 for your registration to be considered final.

Capital Region History Day Virtual Contest


The New York State Museum invites you to participate in the annual Capital Region History Day virtual competition. National History Day hosts more than half a million students from around the world as they conduct research and interpret historical topics through the lens of an annual theme. Students in grades 6-12 may discover and unveil history's secrets and express what they have learned through one of the five following formats:

Students should visit the National History Day website at www.nhd.org to see how to get started, locate resources for conducting research, and download the NHD rulebook and the 2021 theme book. The national website also has a list of frequently asked questions and exemplary past projects from each category.

The National History Day methodology supports teachers and schools through aligning curriculum and instructional priorities with current education standards, while preparing students for college and career readiness.

Capital Region History Day Virtual Judge Registration


Thank you for your interest in judging this year's Capital Region History Day competition!


We are looking for judges who have knowledge in areas of New York State history, a basic comfort level with technology, and a desire to work with students. To be a judge, please create an account on this website and then log in to register. 


Judges will review student entries, discuss in groups, complete rubrics to evaluate student work, and select entries to win special prizes and proceed to the next level of competition. This year's competition will be entirely virtual. There will be no student interviews this year.
